36° Biennial São Paulo [Conjugations] – Várzea: spaces for relief

On September 6 th 2025, as part of Conjugations, the public program of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo – Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice, which aims to bring together institutions from all over the world to conjoin, explore, and collectively celebrate humanity, the participation of Spatial Strategies, Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, will take place. The event will be held from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Praça das Bandeiras, on the 1st floor.

Starting from the conceptual understanding of várzea as an ecosystem of fertility, multiplicity, and tension, we propose the creation of a relational space of relief for Bienal visitors, Raumstrategien practitioners, and park passersby. Instead of using only a physical fabric, the space will be embodied through sound, forming a polyphonic soundscape over a two-hour period in the afternoon. This open-air space will be activated by 10 to 20 participants from the group, and its dimension will be determined by the size of the audience present.

The Performance Desenterrar O Rio, created for this program, starts with the intention of unburying the underground river “Córrego do Sapateiro” that passes underneath the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion in the Parque Ibirapuera. Starting with the intention of listening to the river as an entity, we transformed the yellow fabric used in our previous performances, into a Flying River. Evoking the river entities through songs and sounds produced by our bodies, we invited the audience to participate, embodying collectively the voice of the river, creating a space for gathering, playing, and listening.
